The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most significant traditional festivals in China, with a history spanning more than 2,000 years. Observed on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year, it is widely celebrated across the country and has been listed as a national intangible cultural heritage, showcasing the profound charm of traditional Chinese civilization.

The Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival

The most well-known origin of the festival is to commemorate Qu Yuan, a loyal and patriotic poet of the Warring States Period. As a devoted minister of the State of Chu, Qu Yuan advocated national prosperity and integrity. After witnessing the fall of his homeland, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month out of deep loyalty and despair. Local villagers, moved by his noble character and patriotism, rowed boats to search for his body and threw glutinous rice balls into the river to prevent fish and shrimp from harming his remains. These ancient folk behaviors gradually evolved into the classic traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival passed down to this day. In addition to commemorating Qu Yuan, the festival also originates from ancient Chinese dragon totem worship and summer epidemic prevention rituals, carrying the ancient people’s pursuit of health and harmony with nature.

Eating Zongzi: Zongzi, or glutinous rice dumplings, is the iconic festival food. Made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves with various fillings, zongzi symbolizes people’s remembrance of Qu Yuan. With the development of culture, sweet and savory flavors have been formed to suit different tastes, becoming an indispensable festival delicacy.

Dragon Boat Racing: Dragon boat racing is the most lively and spectacular custom of the festival. Teams row vigorously in rhythmic unison on the water, representing the ancient people’s rescue efforts for Qu Yuan. Today, it has developed into a popular mass sports activity that embodies unity, perseverance and enterprising spirit.

Beyond traditional celebrations, the Dragon Boat Festival carries profound cultural and spiritual connotations. Firstly, it inherits the spirit of patriotism and integrity, inspiring generations of Chinese people to uphold lofty morals and love their homeland. Secondly, the festival embodies the traditional Chinese philosophy of harmony between humans and nature. The summer customs of preventing plagues and keeping healthy reflect people’s respect for natural laws and pursuit of physical well-being. Moreover, as a festival for family and community gatherings, it strengthens emotional bonds, inherits folk culture, and retains the unique cultural memory of the Chinese nation.
