A moulded activity board with drum surfaces, sticks and a printed icon strip.
Moving from a paper book to a moulded board changes the durability question completely. The surfaces are struck rather than pressed, so the pads, the mounting and the sound module have to survive impact rather than touch. Loose sticks are separate parts that have to be tethered or replaceable, and they are a size and a safety decision at the age grade. The icon strip is where the audio map is made visible.
Choose this reference when the product is for a younger child or a rougher environment than a book. Decide how many sound spots there are, whether the sticks are tethered, and how the impact areas are tested, since a drum pad has a failure mode a page does not.

- Board and binding Board thickness, lamination and binding decide whether the product survives a year in a nursery. Spiral, sewn and glued bindings behave differently under a battery module, so choose the binding and the module together.
- The audio map Write the map before the artwork is final: page, spot, track, length and language. It is the document the sound module is programmed from, and a late change to it is a late change to every unit.
- Buttons and contacts Printed contact sheets, moulded buttons and touch spots have different failure modes and different costs per unit. Decide the count and the layout with the illustrator in the room.
- Battery and safety The battery compartment on a book is the part a safety review looks at first. Confirm the cell type, the screw fixing and the age grade before the module is sourced.
- Print and finishing Paper stock, ink and finish change how the audio panel is mounted and how the book lies flat. Approve a printed and assembled dummy rather than a flat proof.
