Manufacturing reference

What this reference shows, and what you would decide.

A winged reptile, which is the only shape in the range whose packed size is not its display size.

Wings are large flat panels attached along a curved body seam, and they are the one part of a dinosaur plush that has to fold for packing and recover afterwards. Wing span drives the carton, the compression method and the recovery time, and a long head crest at the other end of the body makes the balance harder. Whether the wing is single layer, lined or lightly padded changes all three.

This is the reference to use when freight cost is part of the product decision rather than an afterthought. Settle the wingspan and the folded pack size in the same conversation, and decide how long you will allow the wings to take to recover their shape after the box is opened.

Decisions this product type puts in front of you

  • Sculpt and proportion Dinosaur characters sell on head to body ratio and expression. Agree the proportion at a sculpt review, because a few millimetres on the muzzle changes how friendly the whole animal reads, and it is cheap to fix there.
  • Contrast materials Spines, plates, claws, horns and belly panels are usually a second and third fabric. Confirm every contrast material at the same time as the body fabric so one mill can hold all of the shades across the run.
  • Applied parts and pull tests Every plate, spike and claw is an attachment point a pull test will find. Choose sewn in against glued or moulded before sampling, and set the age grade first, since that is what decides the force the joint has to survive.
  • Tooling and quantity Setup here is pattern making and the sculpt review rather than steel. A family of dinosaurs sharing one body block is far cheaper than a family of unrelated sculpts, which is worth knowing before you pick the range.
  • Packaging Long necks, tails and dorsal plates do not fold the way a bear does. Plan the carton around the real silhouette and decide how long the toy has to recover its shape after compression.
