Manufacturing reference
A plated dinosaur, which is the clearest example in the range of a repeated applied part.
A double row of plates down the back and onto the tail means the same cut part attached many times at changing angles. That is a line time question as much as a design one. Every plate is a pull test point, and the rows cross the back seam, so plate placement and seam allowance have to be planned together. The plates also stand proud of the body, which is what decides how the toy packs.
This is the reference for a brief that wants visible craft on the shelf. Decide the plate count and the plate size first, because those two numbers set both the character and the assembly cost. Then decide whether they are sewn into the seam or applied on top of it.
