Manufacturing reference

What this reference shows, and what you would decide.

A torch that does two jobs: a story lens on the side and a star dome on the top.

Two light paths in one handheld body is the interesting problem here. The perforated dome scatters light across a ceiling while the side lens projects a focused image, and they need different sources, different apertures and a control scheme a child can understand without reading. A loop handle changes the grip and gives somewhere to hang the product, which also has to be a considered decision at the age grade.

Use this reference when the product has to work as a night light and as a story device. Decide whether the two modes can run together, what the default state is at power on, and how long the dome mode is allowed to run before it turns itself off.

Decisions this product type puts in front of you

  • Optics Lens, focus travel and light source decide whether the image is sharp on a ceiling at bedtime. Fix the throw distance you are designing for, then check the corners of the image, not the centre.
  • The image library Discs, film strips and slides all need artwork prepared for the format. Agree how many images ship in the box, who owns them and how a new set is bought once the product is in a home.
  • Light and bedroom use This is a product used in a dark room by a small child. Decide the brightness range, the auto off timer and what the unit does when the story ends, and write that behaviour into the specification.
  • Power and handling A torch is held and dropped; a bedside unit is not. Pick the cell type, the switch and the housing for the way the product is actually used, and say what happens as the battery falls.
  • Packaging Discs and slides have to be held, presented and reordered. Plan the tray, the starter set and the refill pack alongside the product rather than after it.

  • Whether the product is handheld or sits on a surface.
  • How many images or stories ship in the box, and who owns the artwork.
  • Whether narration is included, and in which languages.
  • Destination markets and the age grade you intend to print.
  • Quantity, and whether image sets are sold separately.
