Reference images show a starting point. Shape, materials, color, functions and packaging can be developed around your brief.

Manufacturing reference

What this reference shows, and what you would decide.

A handheld torch where a ribbed dial, not a disc, changes the image.

Turning a dial instead of swapping a disc removes the part a child can lose, and it moves cost from the packaging into the mechanism. The dial has to index cleanly so an image lands square rather than half way, and the detent feel is what tells a child it has worked. A top handle changes the grip and gives somewhere to hang the product, which is its own decision at the age grade.

Choose this reference when the play pattern is exploring and you do not want to sell refill discs. Decide the image count the dial can carry, the switch behaviour so it cannot be left on in a toy box, and whether the buttons stay symbol only in every market.

Decisions this product type puts in front of you

  • Optics Lens, focus travel and light source decide whether the image is sharp on a ceiling at bedtime. Fix the throw distance you are designing for, then check the corners of the image, not the centre.
  • The image library Discs, film strips and slides all need artwork prepared for the format. Agree how many images ship in the box, who owns them and how a new set is bought once the product is in a home.
  • Light and bedroom use This is a product used in a dark room by a small child. Decide the brightness range, the auto off timer and what the unit does when the story ends, and write that behaviour into the specification.
  • Power and handling A torch is held and dropped; a bedside unit is not. Pick the cell type, the switch and the housing for the way the product is actually used, and say what happens as the battery falls.
  • Packaging Discs and slides have to be held, presented and reordered. Plan the tray, the starter set and the refill pack alongside the product rather than after it.

Send this and we can quote something close to it

  • Whether the product is handheld or sits on a surface.
  • How many images or stories ship in the box, and who owns the artwork.
  • Whether narration is included, and in which languages.
  • Destination markets and the age grade you intend to print.
  • Quantity, and whether image sets are sold separately.
