Reference images show a starting point. Shape, materials, color, functions and packaging can be developed around your brief.

Manufacturing reference

What this reference shows, and what you would decide.

A barrel bodied player with a carry handle and a card slot above the speaker.

Portability adds requirements the shelf products do not have: a handle that survives being swung, a case that survives a drop from a pushchair, and controls a child can find without looking. Putting the card slot in the middle of the speaker face keeps the front simple. The slot and the acoustic opening then compete for the same area, so the grille pattern and the slot height have to be drawn together.

Choose this reference when the use case is a car seat or a nursery bag. Decide the run time you are designing for and the drop height the case has to survive. Then decide how the handle is fixed, since it is the first thing a child lifts the product by.

Decisions this product type puts in front of you

  • How content reaches the child Cards, figures, discs and onboard memory are four different products wearing the same shell. Pick one first, because it decides the reader, the mechanism, the box contents and what you sell a customer six months later.
  • Enclosure and tooling A character shell is steel tooling, so the sculpt has to be right before it is cut. Agree the parting lines, the texture and the grille pattern at the same review, since all three are visible on every unit you ever ship.
  • Sound quality A small speaker in a sealed volume is the difference between a toy that sounds like a toy and one a parent leaves on. Decide the driver, the sealed space behind it and the maximum volume the product will allow.
  • Power and charging Choose replaceable cells or a rechargeable pack, then decide where the port sits and how a parent knows the unit is charging. This reaches the case, the label and the transport paperwork.
  • Packaging and refills Card and figure sets have to be presented in the box and reordered afterwards. Plan the tray, the starter set and the refill pack together rather than after the shell is signed off.

  • The content route: cards, figures, discs or onboard tracks.
  • How many titles ship in the box and how long each one runs.
  • Audio languages, and whether the tracks are licensed or original.
  • Destination markets and the age grade you intend to print.
  • Quantity, and whether refill sets are sold separately.
