Manufacturing reference

What this reference shows, and what you would decide.

A character shaped drawing panel with a slot above the writing area and a stylus stored in the body.

Wrapping a rectangular panel in a dinosaur silhouette means the moulded shell carries decorative features, a stylus channel and a top slot at once. Each of those is a place the tool has to open. The stylus channel is the detail worth getting right, because a stylus that is not held is a stylus that is lost in a week. A row of side buttons sits where a child grips the board, so the button force and the grip area are one decision.

Use this reference when the product has to look like a toy on a shelf rather than a device. Decide the panel size first, because it sets the shell and the price. Then decide what goes in the top slot, and whether the character features can be moulded in one shot or need a second colour.

Decisions this product type puts in front of you

  • The drawing surface A writing panel, a wipe clean board and a printed sheet behave differently under a child and cost differently to replace. Decide the surface, then decide whether the stylus is tethered, stored in the body or sold separately.
  • Content and templates Cards, sheets or discs are the reason the product is used twice. Agree the starting set, the artwork owner and how a refill pack is bought, because a creative toy without refills is used once.
  • Controls Keep the button count to what a child of the target age can learn in one sitting. Every extra control is a moulded part, a contact and a line test, and it makes the pack copy harder to write.
  • Power and durability These products are used flat on a table and dropped off it. Decide the cell type, the battery door fixing and the corner radius together, and say how the product behaves when the battery is low.
  • Packaging The stylus, the sheets and the refills all have to be presented and held. Plan the tray, the retail hook and the language of the instructions at the same time as the product.
